CORONA VIRUS - GENUS: CORONAVIRIDAE

Coronavirus is a family of viruses that are known to cause Upper Respiratory Tract Infections and Lower Respiratory Tract Infections in mammals and even gastrointestinal diseases in some rare cases.

This family of viruses is divided into 4 subgenera.

  • α-Coronavirus
  • β-Coronavirus
  • γ-Coronavirus
  • δ-Coronavirus
The recent strain of COVID-19(name declared by WHO) or SARS-CoV-2(name declared by Corona Virus Study Group of the international committee on 11th February 2020) belongs to the β-Coronavirus sub-genera of Coronavirus family.

β-Coronavirus family contains the following strains of Coronavirus:

  • HCoV-HKU1
  • HCoV-OC43
  • SARS-CoV (SARS-Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)
  • MERS-CoV (MERS-Middle East Respiratory Syndrome)
  • SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)

Why is COVID-19  so dangerous?

COVID-19 causes symptoms of fever, cough, fatigue, and in some rare cases gastrointestinal infection in certain individuals. As such symptoms are very common in many other disease but the symptoms caused by COVID-19 stand out because no anti-viral drug tested seem effective till now to treat these symptoms i.e. if you catch an infection caused by COVID-19, there is no way you will recover from it anytime soon.

It is a completely different story if your immune system is strong enough to deal with COVID-19 symptoms. WHO-World Health Organization is putting in a lot of effort to treat the symptoms of this virus and to cure its effects completely.
